James McGurk is a Level 5 Higher Level Apprentice studying Manufacturing and Engineering. James’ current role with Nugent is Apprentice Production Engineer, and daily duties include ensuring a smooth flow of materials through the production cutting process.

Why did you choose to study an apprenticeship and what advice would you give to someone considering this route?

I wanted the best of both worlds: getting paid and also learning valuable work experience. I would advise anyone to complete an apprenticeship as you will have 3/4 years work experience along with your degree.

What do you like most about working here?

The chance for progression within the company which gives the feeling of job stability, and the quality of Nugent products , where everything is done to a high standard. I love how everyone is approachable and your progress doesn’t go unnoticed.

How did you find out about apprenticeship opportunities at Nugent?

I found out about the Nugent apprenticeship opportunities through South West College career days and my friends had also talked about Nugent to me.

What made you choose Nugent?

I chose Nugent because the company is innovative and constantly developing. They also have a great reputation of treating everyone equally and offer great opportunities for progression.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

I enjoy being able to apply the theoretical learning into practical learning. This helps gain a deeper knowledge and develop my skills within engineering.
