Why did you want to join Nugent?
I chose Nugent because it is a growing company with lots of opportunities for development in my career.
I have experience with operating the press brake machine, so I know my way around the cut shop and this position gave me the chance to expand on my skillset.
How would you describe a typical week in your role at Nugent?
I would start the evening shift by getting a summary and production plan of what has happened that day already. This guides what I need to plan and complete for the rest of the day, in my own role and with others in the team.
I work mainly on the CNC machine. First, I check the production plan, then make sure to check the thickness and size of the steel going into the machine. I enter in the correct programme and start the cutting process. In between this I would help others in the team with various tasks. Once the steel is cut, I then separate the materials for different areas. For example, onto the General Purpose trailer pallets, or over to the Welding department or out for galvanising.
What do you like most about your role?
I’m never bored. Even though my main role is operating the CNC machine, I get to help operate other machines when necessary. I am always learning something new and get to problem solve in this role, discovering different areas for improvement and sometimes teaching others the ropes on some of the machines. I am constantly developing my skills.
The team is great, and we all help each other out when needs be.
What advice would you give to someone considering this role as a career?
You can make the most out of your role if you work hard, show ambition and are willing to learn regardless of which position you’re in. Being able to problem solve and have patience when learning something new is a key part too.
I find being a people person has helped me as I deal with quite a few different people inside and outside of the cut shop.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I lead an active social life. When I’m not playing video games, going to the gym, or playing football, I like to go hiking or partying with my friends.
